Free handyman invoice template

Handyman invoice template for a day of mixed jobs.

A handyman invoice rarely has one job on it. Hang a door, patch drywall, fix a dripping faucet, replace a fan: each task is a line, the materials you bought are their own lines, and the template adds it all up and taxes only what your state taxes.

Or skip the typing

Say the job. The invoice writes itself.

This template is yours to use, no account needed. When you are done typing line items into a form, Voice To Task CRM does the same job from a 20-second recording: you say the parts, the hours and the customer, and the app drafts the invoice with your tax rate and your hourly rate already applied. Create a free account and get the app on the App Store or Google Play. The first 5 voice logs cost nothing.

For example, you say

“Did the punch list at the Parkers. Hung the pantry door, two hours. Patched and painted the hallway, three hours, 38 in materials. Swapped the bath fan, one hour, the fan was 64.”

What to put on it

What goes on a handyman invoice.

  1. One line per task Name each task the way the customer asked for it (“fix the sticking pantry door”) so they recognise every line. A single “labor, 6 hours” line invites a question; six lines of one hour each do not.
  2. Materials you bought, at cost or marked up List what you supplied with a quantity and a price. If you pass hardware-store receipts through at cost, say so in the notes; if you mark up, just price the line. Keep materials off the labor lines: in many states materials are taxable and labor is not.
  3. Trip or minimum charge If you have a minimum (two hours, or a trip fee), put it on its own line the first time and state it in your terms. Customers who were told up front rarely dispute it.
  4. License and insurance line Handyman licensing varies: some states set a dollar ceiling for unlicensed work (California’s is $1,000 per project including materials, as of 2026 under B&P §7048), others license handymen outright. Print your license number if you have one, and “insured” if you are.
  5. Due date and how to pay Residential customers often pay on the spot; the template still prints a due date (net 7 by default) and your payment terms so the ones who do not pay have a date to miss.

Licensing and deposit rules named above are the California Contractors State License Board’s (Business and Professions Code §7030.5, §7048, §7159.5); other states differ. Sales-tax treatment of labor and materials is set by each state’s department of revenue. None of this is legal or tax advice; check your own state board and your accountant.

How each is usually billed. Prices are yours; the template has no price list and the example figures in the form are placeholders, not rates.

Handyman invoice questions.

How should a handyman invoice list several small jobs?

One line per task, named the way the customer described it, with the hours or a flat price. Materials you bought go on their own lines. The template totals labor and materials separately so the customer sees both.

Do I charge sales tax on handyman work?

Usually on the materials you resell, and in many states not on the labor; some states tax repair labor too. The template lets you mark each line taxable or not. Check with your state department of revenue.

Can I invoice without a contractor license?

Rules vary by state. Some states allow unlicensed handyman work below a dollar limit per job (California’s limit is $1,000 including materials), others require a license for any paid work. The invoice does not change what you may legally do; check your state board.

Is the handyman invoice template free?

Yes. Fill it in and download or print the PDF with no signup. Nothing you type leaves your browser. It is made by the team behind Voice To Task CRM, a voice invoicing app for handymen and contractors, which is separate and optional.
